It has been a Portsmouth City Council aspiration for some time to provide better access to the Naval Base for cars entering from the M275. Trafalgar Gate was redeveloped in 2005 with this in mind and the Council is now in a position to fund the works, with a contribution from the MOD, to build a 2 lane access road directly from the M275 into Trafalgar Gate and also to connect the current 2 lane egress from the gate out onto the M275. This should considerably ease the current congestion at peak times coming into the Naval Base and with some work planned for traffic flows inside the Naval Base, it should make getting out in the evening better as well.
Work is due to start on Fri 16 Apr and is scheduled to be finished by mid-Oct. There will be lane closures on the M275 and the road out of Portsmouth from May to Jul, but it is expected that these will be restricted to outside peak times. There will also be disruption at Trafalgar Gate in Sep and Oct when the new road is joined to the Naval Base.
It is the eventual aim that Trafalgar Gate will become the Naval Base’s main gate and more information on this will be promulgated as the plan matures.
